Chapter 13

BLOOD REBEL

“BABE, WE DON’T HAVE TO do this,” Kingston whispers from the direction I heard Austin’s growl. I peer past my sister, catching sight of all three of my guys lurking within the trees that make up a grove toward the outskirts.

It takes everything in me not to run to them. Not to start bawling my eyes out in front of the sudden audience that inches closer by the second, all here for the spectacle my life has become.

“Turn around, and we’ll meet you outside the gate,” Austin says.

“We’ll figure out a different way to handle this,” Diego adds.

I straighten my shoulders, summoning the strength my guys’ nearby presences give me to keep my shit together even though I want to fall apart. Because we’ve come all this way for a reason. As much as I want to say it was for my sister, it wasn’t. It’s more than her. I’m here on behalf of Donor Life Corp, and the last thing I want to do is mess up no matter how much it pisses me off that they’ve made me come here.

“Ramona, this isn’t about us, and I’m not leaving. I have a meeting with the council of Haven Springs to discuss some serious matters. I was told I’d be seeing Niall Maher, but apparently your community neglected to inform Donor Life Corp of these changes.”

“The paperwork was going out in the morning. The vote just happened hours ago,” Hayden says, meeting my glare with his own.

“Sounds awfully convenient to have such a vote just before my arrival,” I say.

Hayden doesn’t react. “It’s been a long time coming.”

I roll my eyes. “Doesn’t matter.” I motion toward the white building, noticing the placard declares it to be City Hall. I didn’t even know that sort of government was still around. “Shall we go inside? As head of the daylight household of the Divinity Estate and future true heir to the Divines and Donor Life Corp, I have a message to deliver.”

“What?” Hayden and Ramona both say in unison.

I guess my guys failed to mention my visit’s intentions to them. Or maybe Niall didn’t.

Holding out the envelope with the stack of papers, I hand it over. “All the details are in here. Now, please. I don’t have much time, and I plan to use most of it to visit with my family.” Because I’m not leaving before I see my cousins even if Ramona doesn’t want me here.

Ramona glares. “I told you—”

Hayden pulls out the top sheet and hands it to Ramona, cutting her off. “It seems Dana and Fallon approved her visit on your behalf, Mona.”

Mona? A new name to go with her new look. Her new life.

“Can’t I overrule it?” she asks.

Hayden tightens his jaw, continuing to flip through the rest of the paperwork. “No. It’s their right.”

“I’m their guardian.”

He shakes his head. “They’re over thirteen. No one their age requires a guardian here. If they did, things would be complicated. The majority of new arrivals are considered minors.
